Artificial intelligence is reshaping how sustainability teams work. Used well, it removes repetitive tasks, catches errors earlier and turns ESG data into decisions. Used carelessly, it can produce confident answers without evidence. This article looks at where AI adds real value and how to use it responsibly.
The workload problem
ESG reporting has grown faster than sustainability teams. Companies now report to several frameworks, answer customer questionnaires, prepare for assurance and track targets, often with the same small team. Much of their time goes into collecting documents, re-keying numbers, reconciling units and copying text between reports. These are tasks AI can help with.
Data capture from documents
A large share of ESG data arrives as documents: utility bills, fuel invoices, waste manifests, travel receipts and supplier certificates. AI models can read these documents, extract quantities, units, dates and suppliers, and propose entries for review. The person reviewing the entry sees the source document next to the extracted values, confirms or corrects them, and the evidence is stored with the data automatically.
This reduces manual entry and, just as importantly, keeps the evidence trail that assurance requires.
Validation and anomaly detection
AI and statistical models can learn the normal patterns in a company's data and flag values that look wrong: a meter reading ten times higher than usual, a missing month, an emission factor that does not match the fuel type, or an intensity metric that moves without a change in production. Catching these issues at the point of entry is far cheaper than finding them during audit.
Framework mapping
The same underlying data point can appear in BRSR, GRI, CDP, IFRS S2, the ESRS and regional exchange guidelines, often with slightly different definitions. AI can suggest mappings between a company's indicators and framework requirements, highlight gaps and keep mappings up to date as frameworks change. Specialists still review the mappings, but the starting point is far better than a blank spreadsheet.
Copilots that answer with sources
An ESG copilot lets users ask questions in plain language, such as what were our Scope 2 emissions last quarter, which sites missed their water target, or which suppliers have not submitted data. The answer should always cite the underlying data and documents. A copilot that cannot show its sources is not suitable for reporting.
Drafting narrative disclosures
Large language models can draft narrative sections of reports, such as policy descriptions, management approaches and explanations of year-on-year changes, based on the company's own data and documents. Drafts save time, but they must be reviewed by people who understand the business. Responsibility for what is published stays with the company.
Forecasting and optimization
Beyond reporting, AI helps reduce emissions. Predictive models forecast energy demand, emissions and equipment failures, so teams can act early. Optimization models and digital twins recommend operating settings that cut energy use while maintaining quality, and in closed-loop setups can write setpoints back to control systems under operator supervision. This is where AI moves from saving reporting time to saving tonnes of carbon.
Using AI responsibly
- Keep a human in the loop for every reported number and published sentence.
- Require sources and evidence for AI-generated answers.
- Log what the AI suggested and what people approved.
- Protect confidential data and control where models run.
- Consider the environmental footprint of AI itself, and choose efficient approaches.
